Spirit of Britain

Dunkirk 70th Anniversary

On the beaches of Dunkirk

British and French soldiers in Bray Dunes

Spirit of Britain were involved in the 70th Anniversary commemorations of the evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk at the end of May 2010. We drove to France in our 1937 Morris CS8 15cwt lorry and spent the week at Fort des Dunes, Dunkerque with many French participants who were recreating the situation at the Fort exactly 70 years ago. This involved over 60 French troops supported by a light tank, and anti-aircraft defences. The Fort was attacked by German dive-bombers on the 29th May and over 100 members of the Army and Gendarmerie who were stationed there were killed. The Fort is located just behind Bray Dunes so, accompanied by French troops, we made our way over the dunes to the beach to take the photos seen in this section, and also to reflect on the circumstances of 70 years ago.
