Spirit of Britain’s impression of the British soldier in North Africa during WW2 also incorporates the Italian campaign, which followed. Much equipment was re-supplied from Indian manufacturers, and has a different look to British production. Khaki Drill uniforms were mixed with wool and in Italy, denim battledress too, to help overcome the changing climate. The look of the man fighting in the expanses of the desert featured the addition of items sent from home or purchased locally, as well as liberated German or Italian equipment and uniforms. This can be seen clearly in photos of the Long Range Desert Group and SAS on operations. This environment was one of the harshest encountered during the War. The Italian campaign brought its own problems with torrential rain for many months as the Allies fought to dislodge Axis troops from the mountainous areas of central Italy.
